The Slender Piranha (Serrasalmus elongatus) is a relatively uncommon find in the aquarium trade, and its price tag usually reflects that scarcity. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, it inhabits fast-moving waters, and its torpedo-shaped body is almost certainly an adaptation to those currents. That slim profile is also what makes identification straightforward. No other serrasalmid shares quite the same elongated form, though it is worth noting that older adults gradually fill out into a more diamond-shaped silhouette, with the degree of change varying by locality. Two distinct color variants exist: one, known among hobbyists as the "black mask" form, shows a bold dark stripe through the eye extending to the gill cover, with a silvery body and dark humeral spot. The other carries orange-red tones in the throat, pectoral fins, and lower gill cover, with generally darker fins overall. Personality can be inconsistent. Some individuals are bold and will actively investigate hands near the glass, while others remain nervous regardless of how settled the tank becomes. What is consistent is that this fish should be kept alone. It does not tolerate tankmates of any kind, and housing two together almost always ends badly. Aquarium maintenance requires obvious caution, but these fish are generally more skittish than aggressive and tend to slow down considerably with age.
