Gery's Piranha (Serrasalmus geryi) is one of the more visually distinctive members of a notoriously difficult-to-identify genus, set apart from its relatives by a purple stripe that runs from the underside of the jaw up over the body. A feature unique to this species. Add in a deep, laterally compressed frame, highly reflective scales, and vivid orange-red eyes, and you have a fish that turns heads whenever it actually shows up for sale, which is not all that often. It originates from the Tocantins River Basin in Brazil and, like most of its kin, is a committed carnivore. In the wild it falls under the category of Pirambeba rather than true piranha, that label in South America belongs specifically to Pygocentrus species, though the distinction rarely matters to the fish itself. In an aquarium, S. geryi is best treated as a solo specimen. Debate continues among enthusiasts about whether groups can be maintained long-term, and while some have pulled it off, the risk of injury is real enough that keeping one alone is the sensible default. It can live well over a decade, tends to become less active with age, and despite its fearsome reputation is often skittish rather than aggressive unless it feels cornered. Breeding in captivity has been reported but remains poorly documented.
