The redeye piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus) is one of the largest and most taxonomically tangled members of its genus, found across a broad sweep of South American river systems including the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Guiana Shield drainages, and coastal rivers of northeastern Brazil. In the wild it turns up in fast-moving rapids as well as the deeper, calmer zones of major rivers, where it feeds opportunistically on fish, crabs, lizards, insects, and even the occasional small mammal. Despite its fearsome reputation, it tends toward timidity in aquarium settings rather than aggression. Though its dentition is serious enough to demand respect during tank maintenance. The defining feature of mature fish is the vivid red iris that gives the species its most recognizable common name; juveniles lack this and carry spotted markings that make them notoriously easy to misidentify at the point of sale. Geography adds further complexity: numerous regional forms exist, varying considerably in body shape and color, and enthusiasts have assigned these their own informal names that unfortunately create as much confusion as clarity. This is strictly a specimen fish. It has no practical place in a community setup and does not tolerate its own kind peacefully. Captive breeding is exceptionally rare and has only been documented under very specific large-scale conditions. These fish are long-lived and grow substantial, so they deserve careful thought before purchase.
