Found in the Ucayali River basin of Peru, this small but formidable characin, Serrasalmus sanchezi, belongs to a genus that gets lumped in with true piranhas by the hobby. Though in South America, the 'piranha' label actually belongs to Pygocentrus species, not Serrasalmus. That said, S. sanchezi is still a dedicated carnivore that demands respect and careful planning. Adults develop a distinctive red throat patch that has caused no end of identification headaches, with fish regularly sold under names belonging to related species like S. spilopleura, S. medinai, or even the red-bellied piranha. The most reliable way to confirm what you actually have is checking the serrae along the belly. In S. sanchezi these are irregularly arranged, unlike the uniform rows found in its lookalikes. Some adults also develop deep purple scaling, though whether this represents a geographic variant or simply mature coloration is still unsettled. Despite its modest adult size, this fish should be kept alone. It is genuinely unpredictable with tankmates, and the debate about keeping groups is best left to very experienced keepers with serious space and backup options. It lives well over a decade and mellows somewhat with age, so this is a long-term commitment, not an impulse buy.
