Speckled Piranha

The speckled piranha (Serrasalmus spilopleura) is one of those fish that commands respect the moment you see it up close. Native to the Guaporé River basin in South America, with populations also recorded from Argentina's Paraná River system, this species occupies a range of slow-moving and blackwater habitats where it operates as an ambush predator. The body is deep and laterally compressed in classic piranha fashion, silvery to bronze with a scatter of darker speckles across the flanks and a noticeably robust jaw lined with interlocking triangular teeth. Juveniles often show more vivid patterning that fades somewhat as they mature. Like most Serrasalmus species, the speckled piranha is not a schooling fish in the way its more famous cousins are sometimes portrayed. It is fundamentally a solitary animal and genuinely aggressive toward its own kind. Keeping multiples almost always ends in serious injury or death, so a single-specimen setup is the only practical approach. That single specimen will still need a spacious tank with good filtration to handle a meat-heavy diet and the waste that comes with it. This is a fish for keepers who enjoy observing a predator on its own terms, not a community tank candidate under any circumstances.
