The barred spinefoot (Siganus doliatus) is a herbivorous reef fish from the Western Pacific, ranging from Palau and Kosrae down through eastern Indonesia to northwestern Australia and Tonga, where it lives in lagoon and seaward reef environments rich in coral growth. It has a bold pattern of horizontal bars and wavy lines across a pale body. Enough to make it easy to identify among similar rabbitfishes. One of the more interesting behavioral quirks of this species is how early it pairs off: juveniles school loosely together, sometimes mixing with young parrotfishes, but pairs begin forming once fish reach only a few centimeters long. As they mature, those bonded pairs gradually move away from the schools, eventually settling into deeper lagoon waters or along reef drop-offs where they graze on benthic algae independently. Like all rabbitfishes, the barred spinefoot carries a practical warning for anyone handling it. The dorsal spines are venomous, so a careful approach is warranted during net work or tank maintenance. Despite that, it is a genuinely peaceful fish in the aquarium and poses no real threat to tankmates. It does best in a large, well-established reef or FOWLR system with plenty of algae growth and space to move. A good option for the intermediate keeper ready to step up to a bigger display.
