The barhead spinefoot (Siganus virgatus) is a wide-ranging rabbitfish found across the Indo-West Pacific, from southern India and Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and up into Taiwan and southern China. In the wild it occupies shallow coastal habitats. Coral reefs, sandy flats with rocky patches, soft coral zones, and even estuaries. Juveniles start life among mangroves and can tolerate brackish and even fresh water before migrating to reef environments as they mature. Adults are typically seen in pairs along reef flats and slopes, a social habit that translates reasonably well into aquarium life. The species gets its name from the bold dark bars crossing the head, which contrast against a lighter body patterned with fine blue or yellow lines depending on the individual. Like all rabbitfish, this one is a dedicated herbivore in the wild, grazing on benthic algae and seaweeds, so a tank with regular algae growth or a steady supply of plant-based foods suits it well. Its temperament is genuinely peaceful toward tankmates, but the venomous dorsal spines are a real consideration. Handle this fish with care during transport or maintenance. Given its eventual size, a generous tank is a must.
