The silver hatchetfish (Gasteropelecus sternicla) is one of the most recognizable freshwater fish in the hobby, shaped almost like a tiny axe head thanks to its dramatically deep, keel-like chest. That distinctive profile comes from an unusually large, heavily muscled pectoral girdle. The same anatomy that powers its famous leaps from the water. Despite popular belief, these fish are not capable of true powered flight by flapping their fins; the jump itself is the impressive feat, a rapid and energy-intensive burst used as an escape response. In the wild, they range widely across South America, from the Peruvian Amazon through the Guianas and Venezuela, patrolling slow-moving creeks and swampy shallows right at the surface where they pick off small insects. In the aquarium, they stay at the top almost exclusively. A tight-fitting lid is not optional. Leave a gap overnight and you will likely find one on the floor by morning. Keep them in groups of at least six, ideally more, since solitary individuals or small numbers remain stressed and skittish. They pair well with peaceful mid- and bottom-level fish like tetras, Corydoras, and smaller loricariids. This species is generally considered the hardiest of the silver hatchetfishes, though newly imported specimens can be delicate until they settle in. An intermediate-level species, not quite a beginner fish, but rewarding once established.
