Found in the Irrawaddy, Sittang, and Pegu river drainages of Myanmar, Hemibagrus peguensis is a medium-to-large freshwater catfish that has gone almost entirely unnoticed by the aquarium hobby. It belongs to the genus Hemibagrus, a diverse group of bagrid catfishes distributed across South and Southeast Asia, many of which are better known as food fish than as aquarium residents. This species sits within the H. menoda species group, whose members share a distinctive color pattern of dark spots or irregular vertical markings along the flanks and a reddish or orange caudal fin in living fish. H. peguensis specifically shows dark spots arranged in neat vertical columns, which helps separate it from its close relatives when identification matters. The head is notably flattened with a nearly truncate snout, giving it a broad, squared-off profile typical of the genus. It was historically muddled with H. menoda and is sometimes called the Sittang mystus in passing references, though neither name has stuck in the hobby. Adults reach a solid size, so anyone keeping this species should plan for a spacious setup. Despite its obscurity, it is listed as beginner-appropriate, which makes sense for a robust, carnivorous catfish from a genus with no particular reputation for being difficult.
