Found in the streams of Myanmar, Garra spilota is one of the more visually distinctive members of a genus that can honestly be described as a taxonomic headache. What sets it apart from its relatives is a combination of reddish fins, a row of dark lateral blotches, and an unusual upper lip structure covered in small fleshy growths called unculi. Features that make it identifiable once you know what to look for. Like other Garra species, it possesses a modified lower lip that forms an adhesive disc, letting it grip surfaces firmly in fast-moving water, and its jaws are hardened for scraping algae and biofilm from rocks. Despite being listed as aggressive and territorial in some accounts, hobbyists who have kept this fish often describe it as more tolerant of its own kind than many related species, and a group of three or four seems to bring out more relaxed behavior than keeping a single specimen. It works well in a community built around other stream-dwelling fish from Indochina, provided there is reasonable water flow and a natural arrangement of smooth stones and wood. It surfaces in the trade occasionally rather than regularly, so it is worth picking up when available. Breeding in captivity has not been documented.
