The stellate puffer (Arothron stellatus) is genuinely massive. Adults commonly reach several feet in length, making this the largest puffer species on the planet. In the wild it ranges across the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa out to the Tuamotu Archipelago, with adults favoring clear lagoons and seaward reef slopes while juveniles tend to hang around murkier inshore areas, sometimes even venturing into estuaries. The body is covered in small dark spots scattered across a pale base, and like all puffers it can inflate dramatically when threatened. That fused beak is no decoration either. This fish makes short work of hard-shelled invertebrates, corals, and just about anything else it decides to investigate. In the aquarium, the personality is huge: curious, interactive, and not shy about begging for food or rearranging the decor. The catch is obvious. You need an enormous system to house one properly, and every coral, crustacean, or slow-moving tankmate is considered fair game. Despite the beginner care rating, the sheer scale of the setup required and the fish's destructive potential with invertebrates means this species suits someone who has planned seriously for a large, fish-only environment.
