Banded Tiger Loach

The banded tiger loach (Syncrossus helodes) is a hefty, assertive loach from the river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, including the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Maeklong basins, as well as the northern Malay Peninsula. In the wild it favors large rivers with muddy bottoms and plenty of cover from rocks and submerged wood, moving into flooded areas during the wet season and retreating back to main channels as the dry season sets in. Its pattern of 10 to 12 dark vertical bars along the flanks, often with small irregular markings along the lower body, sets it apart from its close relative Syncrossus hymenophysa, which carries more bars with a bluish border. Fin coloration can vary noticeably by population, with Mekong fish tending toward orange-red paired fins and Chao Phraya specimens often showing yellow. This is an active, territorial fish that can live for well over a decade, so it demands serious planning. It should be kept in groups of at least five or six, ideally more, since isolated or small-group specimens tend toward stress and aggression. Tank mates need to be robust and quick; small or long-finned fish will have a hard time. Notably, these loaches produce audible clicking sounds and will visibly pale during dominance displays, behaviors that are genuinely fascinating to observe in a well-run setup.
