Found in the Niger Delta, lower Niger River, and Cross River systems of Nigeria, Synodontis robbianus is a small-to-mid-sized squeaker catfish that rarely gets much attention despite being one of the more approachable members of its genus. Adults top out around four inches, making them a realistic option for moderately sized aquariums. Identification can be tricky because this species is frequently mixed up with the larger Synodontis nigrita. The key difference is the warmer brownish base coloration of robbianus compared to the cooler, greyer tones of nigrita. Juveniles can look similar to several other Synodontis species as well, so knowing your source matters. In terms of personality, it does develop a territorial streak as it matures, particularly toward its own kind, but the aggression is relatively mild compared to some of its more combative relatives. A group can work in a roomy setup as long as each fish has its own hiding spot to claim. Tankmates should be robust enough not to end up as a snack. West African cichlids, mormyrids, larger tetras, and similar fish all make sensible companions. In the wild it spawns during seasonal floods as an egg scatterer with no parental involvement, and captive breeding hasn't been documented. Overall this is a forgiving, adaptable catfish well suited to anyone curious about keeping Synodontis for the first time.
