Black Catfish (Trachycorystes trachycorystes) is a substantial, dark-bodied catfish native to some of South America's most iconic river systems, including the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo basins. It grows to an impressive size for a home aquarium, reaching well over a foot in some individuals, so giving it adequate space is genuinely important. A roomy tank is a baseline requirement, not a luxury. As an omnivore it tends to be fairly flexible at feeding time, accepting a range of meaty and prepared foods, which makes routine care manageable for a keeper with some prior experience handling larger catfish. One aspect of this species that genuinely stands out from a biological standpoint is its use of oviducal fertilization, meaning fertilization occurs internally within the female's oviduct before eggs are released. A relatively uncommon reproductive strategy among freshwater fish. In the aquarium it behaves as you might expect from a large, deep-water river catfish: it tends toward nocturnal activity and appreciates hiding spots and subdued lighting. It is best suited to keepers who have already worked with mid-to-large South American species and understand the commitment involved in housing a fish of this size over a lifespan that can stretch close to a decade.
