Tetra Toucan (Tucanoichthys tucano) is a genuinely tiny fish, adults rarely exceed about three-quarters of an inch, and the sole representative of its genus. It comes from the blackwater streams of the Uaupés River in the upper Negro River basin of South America, the kind of soft, acidic, nutrient-poor forest water that produces some of the hobby's most unusual tetras. The species went through a process called miniaturization, meaning it reaches sexual maturity at a size smaller than most fish achieve in early juvenile life. In terms of looks, a bold dark lateral stripe runs the length of the body, and newly free-swimming fry carry a subtle iridescent blue-green sheen before adult patterning settles in. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in terms of basic care, it is not a fish to drop into a generic community setup. Its tiny size makes it vulnerable around anything larger, and its specific water chemistry requirements narrow the field considerably. A species-only tank or one shared with equally small, gentle characids and dwarf catfishes suits it best, and it also works well as a dither fish with Apistogramma and similar dwarf cichlids. Males will spar and claim temporary territories around leaves or wood, especially when spawning. Keep a group of at least eight to ten so the fish settle, lose their shyness, and show off their more interesting social dynamics. It does not turn up for sale often, so grab a group when you find them.
