The veiltail goldfish (Carassius auratus var. veiltail) is one of the most elaborately developed forms in the entire goldfish fancy, recognized by its extraordinarily long, flowing double tail fin that hangs in loose, rippling folds with no forked separation at the edge. A trait that sets it apart from most other fancy varieties. The body is round and deep, almost egg-shaped, and the dorsal fin stands tall and upright when the fish is healthy. Like all fancy goldfish, this is a fully human-created form with no wild counterpart; it traces its origins to centuries of selective breeding in East Asia. That dramatic finnage comes with trade-offs. Veiltails are slow swimmers and should never be housed with faster, more competitive tank mates that will out-compete them for food or nip at their delicate fins. Good filtration is non-negotiable, since goldfish in general produce significant waste, and the veiltail's flowing fins can be damaged by sharp decor or strong current. Given attentive husbandry, these fish can live for well over a decade, often growing into genuinely large, personable animals that recognize their keeper. They reward patience and are best suited to someone already comfortable with the basics of goldfish care.
