Asian Needlefish

The Asian needlefish (Xenentodon cancila) is one of those species that looks like it wandered in from a different era. Long, slender, and armed with a beak full of sharp teeth that it is not shy about using. Despite the 'freshwater garfish' nickname it often picks up, this fish is actually a member of the Belonidae family, making it closer kin to marine needlefishes than to true gars. It ranges widely across South and Southeast Asia, from Sri Lanka and India through to the Mekong basin, where it occupies mid-water columns in rivers, canals, and ponds, typically favoring open stretches without floating vegetation. In the wild it feeds heavily on crustaceans and small fish, and in the aquarium it will eat pretty much anything that fits in its mouth. Including your fingers if you are careless. That said, it is genuinely peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow, and juveniles show a noticeable schooling instinct, so keeping a group of four or more brings out more natural behavior. The main challenge is not temperament but setup: this is a fast, active swimmer that needs a well-covered tank with generous horizontal space. Captive breeding is possible but uncommon, with eggs attached to plants or current-exposed surfaces by long adhesive filaments.
