Found among the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika, Xenotilapia leptura is a slender-bodied cichlid that stands out from many of its rift lake relatives by being genuinely peaceful and a dedicated algae grazer rather than a predator. In the wild, females in particular gather into schools that can range from just a handful of fish to several hundred individuals moving together along rocky habitat. A sight that experienced Tanganyika keepers often try to recreate in the aquarium. The diet in the wild consists of both filamentous algae and single-celled algae, so making sure they have good plant-based food sources in captivity is important for long-term health. Their peaceful temperament makes them compatible with other mild-mannered Tanganyikan species, though they do best when kept in groups rather than as isolated specimens. Despite coming from the alkaline, hard waters of Lake Tanganyika, they are not the most demanding rift lake cichlid out there, though some experience with African cichlid water chemistry is helpful before taking them on. Given the right conditions and consistent care, these fish are notably long-lived, which makes the investment of learning their needs well worth it.
