The sun loach (Yasuhikotakia eos) is a compact but feisty loach native to the river systems of Thailand and the Mekong basin, where it occupies fast-flowing stretches littered with boulders and cobble. Its coloring is genuinely distinctive among its relatives. A warm yellow to reddish-brown base with a metallic greenish-gold sheen, reddish or yellowish fins edged with a thin dark stripe, and a prominent dark blotch on either side of the caudal peduncle. Juveniles show vertical barring on the flanks that fades with age. This is not a loach for a peaceful community setup. While manageable in the right conditions, it can be genuinely territorial and should only be paired with robust, fast-moving tankmates like larger danios, devarios, or rasboras. Long-finned and slow-moving species are poor choices. The sun loach is also strongly social and should be kept in groups of at least five or six. Solo specimens often become withdrawn or turn their aggression onto anything fish-shaped nearby. Like others in the genus, it produces audible clicking sounds during feeding or social interactions, and may occasionally be seen resting at odd angles or wedged sideways in decor. Perfectly normal behavior. This is an intermediate-level species best suited to keepers who understand loach behavior and can provide space and structure.
