The red-finned loach (Yasuhikotakia lecontei) is a slender, mid-sized botiid from the large river systems of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins in Southeast Asia, where it haunts rocky, fast-moving water and hides among crevices and submerged debris by day, coming out after dark to hunt snails and other small invertebrates. In the aquarium, it carries a brownish body with a subtle gold-green sheen and paired dark spots near the caudal peduncle. Some populations show dusky yellow fins while others display reddish-orange coloration, which can cause confusion with the related Y. modesta. The slimmer, more elongate build of this species is the clearest way to tell them apart. This is not a fish to keep alone or in small numbers. Yasuhikotakia species form complex social hierarchies and need a group of at least five or six individuals to thrive; fewer than that and the dominant fish may bully its tankmates into declining health. Kept in a proper group, they produce fascinating social behaviors including synchronized swimming patterns, audible clicking sounds, and dramatic color changes during dominance disputes. Temperament sits on the milder side compared to close relatives, though slow or long-finned tankmates should be avoided. Active, open-water cyprinids make good companions. An intermediate-level species with a rewarding social life for keepers willing to give it the space and company it needs.
