Yellow pencil coral (Madracis auretenra) is a branching stony coral native to tropical reef systems across the Western Central Atlantic. Its common name comes from its narrow, finger-like branches that radiate outward in a distinctive pencil-thin growth form, often displaying warm golden-yellow coloration that helps it stand out on the reef. In the wild it is found in association with reef structures in tropical waters, where it contributes to the complex three-dimensional architecture that reef communities depend on. In the aquarium, this coral sits comfortably in the intermediate care category. Not the most demanding coral you could keep, but not a beginner's first choice either. It requires intense lighting and vigorous water movement to thrive, conditions that mirror the well-lit, high-energy zones of its natural habitat. As with most small-polyp stony corals, stable water quality and consistent parameters are essential for long-term success. Placement in a mature, established reef system gives it the best chance to develop its characteristic branching structure over time. It is reef safe and generally not aggressive toward neighboring corals, making it a reasonable candidate for a mixed SPS display if you can meet its demands.
