Zebra Loach

The zebra loach (Botia striata) is a relatively compact member of the family Botiidae, native to the clear, fast-moving hill streams of the Western Ghats and Maharashtra in India. It's frequently recommended as one of the more community-friendly Botia species, partly because its adult size stays modest compared to some of its relatives, and partly because its disposition is genuinely peaceful when kept under the right conditions. The body is dressed in a warm golden-yellow base color crossed by seven to nine darker bars, typically blue, grey, green, or black, with thinner, paler bars interspersed between them. One of the most distinctive identification points is the reddish coloration around the mouth. In some individuals the bar pattern breaks up considerably, so variation within the species can be notable. Like all botiid loaches, zebra loaches are deeply social animals that need to be kept in groups of at least five or six, and preferably ten or more. Solitary individuals or small groups often become withdrawn or nippy toward similar-looking tankmates. The species is also prone to fascinating group behaviors: audible clicking, a restless "loachy dance" around the tank perimeter, shadowing behavior among younger fish, and the habit of wedging themselves sideways into decor while resting. Fin-nipping is a real consideration, so long-finned or very timid tankmates are best avoided.
