Mat anemone (Zoanthus pulchellus) is a colonial zoanthid native to the tropical Western Atlantic, where it spreads across hard substrate in shallow reef environments, forming low, dense carpets of individual polyps connected by a shared tissue mat. Each polyp is small but collectively a well-established colony creates a visually pleasing patchwork across rockwork or rubble zones. Like other zoanthids, it hosts symbiotic algae that do much of the nutritional heavy lifting under decent light, which is part of why this genus tends to do so well in captivity. The care requirements here are refreshingly straightforward. Moderate lighting and moderate water movement suit it well, and it is considered reef safe, posing no meaningful threat to corals or other invertebrates in the system. For newer reef keepers looking to get started with colonial cnidarians, Zoanthus pulchellus is a sensible first choice. It is tolerant of the minor fluctuations in water quality that are common in newer systems, and once established it will gradually encrust surrounding rockwork. As with all zoanthids, handling should be done with care since the mucus can contain palytoxin compounds that irritate skin and eyes.
