The bristle-tailed leatherjacket (Acreichthys tomentosus) is a small filefish found across a broad sweep of the Indo-West Pacific, from Sri Lanka through Indonesia and up to southern Japan. In the wild it gravitates toward seagrass beds, weedy shallows, and rubble zones on coral reefs, where its mottled, textured appearance blends in remarkably well with surrounding vegetation and encrusting growth. The rough, scale-like skin texture and the small bristle-like caudal extensions that give this fish its name make it fairly easy to identify once you know what you're looking for. In terms of personality, it's a solitary creature by nature, and that generally carries over into captivity. One per tank is the sensible approach unless you have a very spacious setup. Its natural diet leans heavily on small invertebrates like amphipods, worms, and molluscs, so it will absolutely go after ornamental shrimp and small snails in a reef tank. That makes it a poor match for most invertebrate-heavy systems, though it can work in a fish-only or FOWLR setup with careful planning. Overall it's a manageable species for an intermediate keeper who can meet its feeding needs and thinks carefully about tankmates.
