About

Found on upper reef slopes where surge and wave action are relentless, Acropora anthocercis has evolved a growth form that reflects its punishing home environment. Colonies spread outward in thick corymbose to encrusting plates, and where wave exposure is most intense, the short, robust branchlets can flatten down almost completely into the substrate. Each branchlet typically carries several axial or near-axial corallites, while the radial corallites press close to the branch surface, their thick flaring walls arranged in a tidy rosette pattern. A form that sheds surge rather than fighting it. Coloration tends toward the cooler end of the spectrum, with blues, mauves, purples, and greys being most typical, giving colonies a subdued but genuinely attractive palette. In the aquarium, this species demands the same conditions it experiences on the reef: very intense lighting and vigorous, turbulent flow. It is not a coral for casual setups or developing reef tanks, and it belongs in the hands of hobbyists who can maintain stable, high-quality water consistently over the long term. For experienced SPS keepers who can meet those demands, it offers a distinctive plate-style growth form that differs from the more commonly kept branching Acropora species.
