Plate Coral (Acropora clathrata) is a table-forming species from the Indo-Pacific that grows as broad, flattened colonies attached at one side, with radiating branches that fuse together into an almost solid horizontal platform. Unlike many Acropora species, it rarely develops vertical branching, instead spreading outward in a low, dense sheet. Coloration tends toward earthy browns, grays, and greens, often with noticeably paler edges along the growing margins. Subtle rather than flashy, but with a strong architectural presence in the aquarium. In the wild, this coral occupies upper reef slopes, back reef margins, and fringing reefs at depths down to around 20 meters, where it benefits from strong water movement and intense light exposure. That natural habitat tells you exactly what to expect in the tank: this is not a species that tolerates compromise on flow or lighting. Given its growth form, you will also need a tank with serious horizontal real estate, as the colony will spread outward considerably over time. Care is firmly in advanced territory, best suited to reefers who already have stable, dialed-in systems and experience keeping demanding SPS corals. Get the conditions right, though, and this coral becomes a genuinely architectural centerpiece.
