Branching Table Coral

Found on sheltered reef slopes across the Indo-West Pacific, Acropora pharaonis is a table and branching coral with a genuinely complex structure. Colonies grow as broad horizontal tables or as irregular masses of interlinked branches, both upright and horizontal, that twist and connect in ways that set it apart from cleaner, more symmetrical Acropora species. The branches themselves are pointed, covered in short branchlets that fuse neighboring main branches together, and packed with abundant incipient axial corallites that give the whole surface a distinctly spiky texture. Radial corallites are pressed flat against the branch with narrow, nose-shaped openings. Coloration is typically grey-brown throughout, with pale tips on the branches. Not a flashy coral by any measure, but the architectural detail rewards a close look. In the wild it turns up from roughly 5 to 25 meters depth, most commonly in calmer, sheltered reef environments rather than high-energy exposed slopes. In the aquarium this is firmly an advanced-keeper coral. It demands very intense lighting and strong, consistent water movement to replicate the conditions it expects on a healthy reef. Precise water chemistry and stability are non-negotiable, so this one is best attempted once you have a mature, well-dialed system already running.
