Variable Soft Coral

Found along the rocky reefs and coastal waters of South Africa, Alcyonium variabile is a soft coral in the family Alcyoniidae that rarely makes headlines in the hobby but quietly earns its place in a reef display. As its species name suggests, this coral is notably variable in form and coloration, which can make identification tricky but also means individual colonies can look quite different from one another. In the wild it grows in the cool, nutrient-rich waters off the South African coast, a region that doesn't overlap much with the typical Indo-Pacific species that dominate the reef trade, so it brings something genuinely different to a collection. In the aquarium it behaves much like other alcyoniid soft corals, extending its polyps to feed and pulling back when disturbed, and its care level is considered approachable for newer reef keepers. It doesn't demand intense lighting or high flow, sitting comfortably in moderate conditions on both fronts. As with most soft corals, stable water quality and consistent parameters will keep it looking its best. It is considered reef safe, posing no threat to stony corals or other tank inhabitants when given adequate space.
