About
Net Coral (Alveopora minuta) sits at the more unusual end of the Alveopora genus, distinguished by its exceptionally small corallites. Roughly the same diameter as those of many Porites species, around a millimeter across. Despite that size, colonies still carry the unmistakable bushy, flowing appearance that makes Alveopora recognizable underwater. The skeletal structure is worth knowing: corallites either lack septa entirely or carry just one or two reduced down to a single spine, with a ring of vertical spines rising above the wall. Growth takes the form of short, irregularly branching knob-like projections. Coloration in the wild runs to greenish-brown, which is fairly understated compared to some of its relatives. In nature, this species occupies rocky surfaces where currents are consistent and strong, so it is adapted to well-oxygenated, flow-rich conditions. That preference for high water movement and intense light carries directly into aquarium care, where recreating that kind of energetic environment is essential. Like most Alveopora, this one is considered a challenge to keep long-term and is best suited to experienced reef keepers who can maintain stable, demanding conditions. It is reef safe and will not bother neighboring corals through aggression.
