The black-lined loach (Ambastaia nigrolineata) is one of only two species in its genus and is seldom seen in the trade, which makes it a genuine find for loach enthusiasts. It comes from the Mekong basin, where it inhabits clear, fast-moving hill streams and small creeks with sandy substrates. Conditions worth keeping in mind when setting up a tank. Its color pattern is the key to telling it apart from its close relative A. sidthimunki: look for a solid dark stripe running along the midlateral line on each flank, paired with a stripe along the dorsal midline, set against a pale yellowish-white body. Vertical bars connect those stripes toward the rear of the body but are far less prominent than in sidthimunki. Behaviorally, this species is where things get genuinely interesting. These loaches are gregarious and form real social hierarchies. Keeping a group of at least five or six is not just recommended but necessary for their wellbeing. Solo or pairs can lead to withdrawn or even combative individuals. Group members engage in documented behaviors including 'shadowing,' where younger fish mirror the movements of older ones flank-to-flank, and audible clicking that intensifies when they're excited. They'll also occasionally 'grey out' during dominance displays, which looks alarming but is normal. A peaceful community fish overall, though best paired with active mid-water swimmers rather than slow or long-finned species.
