A rarely described dwarf cichlid from Colombia, Apistogramma alacrina hails from two separate river systems. The Orteguaza drainage of the Amazon basin and the upper Guaviare drainage feeding into the Orinoco. What sets it apart from all other members of its genus is a distinctive pair of dark blotches located at both the dorsal and ventral base of the pectoral fins, a feature not found on any other formally described Apistogramma. It is closely related to a cluster of trade fish long known as A. sp. 'rotpunkt', and whether those forms ultimately prove to be the same species remains an open question. Despite its small adult size, this is a fish with real personality and some territorial edge, so it works best as the only Apistogramma in the tank. Small, peaceful dither fish like pencilfish can help it feel secure without creating conflict. Spawning is achievable for intermediate keepers, with females taking charge of guarding eggs and fry in caves or crevices among the decor. The male may need to be moved out once breeding begins, as females can turn quite aggressive in tight quarters. Raising fry is the trickier part, since the young are sensitive to water chemistry shifts and do best with frequent small meals and steady, gentle water changes.
