Found in the blackwater drainages of the Rio Branco and middle Rio Negro in South America, Apistogramma gibbiceps is a small dwarf cichlid that rarely exceeds two inches. Like many of its genus, it hails from soft, highly acidic waters stained dark by tannins. And replicating those conditions in the aquarium is key to getting the best out of this fish. Expect the usual Apistogramma dynamic in the tank: males are larger and more colorful, and a single male can be kept with one or two females in a well-structured setup. Breeding behavior is particularly interesting. Females select a cave or enclosed hollow, deposit eggs on the ceiling inside, and take on nearly all parental duties themselves, defending the clutch and wriggling fry with impressive determination for such a small fish. That maternal instinct means you'll want to provide plenty of caves, coconut shells, or clay pots as spawning sites. This species is best suited to keepers with some prior experience with soft-water fish, since it won't tolerate hard or alkaline conditions well. Given the right water chemistry and a calm community of similarly sized tankmates, it's a rewarding and characterful fish to keep.
