Found in the Madeira River drainage near Huamitá in western Brazil, Apistogramma resticulosa is a compact dwarf cichlid with a notably narrow natural range. Males are noticeably larger than females and can be told apart by their pointed dorsal, ventral, and caudal fins, while females carry softer, rounded fins. A reliable sexing cue once you know what to look for. Like most Apistogramma species, this one is a cave spawner: the female deposits eggs on the ceiling of a sheltered cavity and takes on the bulk of brood care herself, becoming noticeably more assertive around nest sites when fry are present. Outside of breeding situations, this is a peaceful fish that coexists well in a community setup, though two males housed together will push back against each other, so a single male with one or more females is the usual approach. A densely planted tank with plenty of caves, coconut shells, or clay pots suits them well and encourages natural behavior. Carnivorous by nature, they do best with a varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality prepared foods. Their care falls comfortably in the intermediate range, making them a rewarding step up for anyone already comfortable keeping dwarf cichlids.
