Steindachner's dwarf cichlid (Apistogramma steindachneri) comes from the river drainages of Guyana and Suriname, including the Essequibo, Demerara, and Corantijn systems, where it inhabits soft, acidic waters. Visually, it can be separated from related species by a narrow lateral stripe that runs into a distinct round spot at the base of the tail, a single triangular marking on the flank, and scales on the back that often show jet-black rear edges contrasting with blue or yellow at the front. The underparts tend toward a bluish wash, making for a fish that rewards a close look. Males grow noticeably larger than females and are built around a harem-based social system, establishing territories that encompass several females, each of which spawns in her own cave or crevice. After eggs are deposited on the ceiling of the cavity, the female takes on most of the brooding duties while the male resumes patrolling and courting. In a single-pair setup he may pitch in once the fry are mobile. Wild-caught specimens can be touchy and are better kept in a species-focused arrangement, ideally with small, unobtrusive tankmates like pencilfish if company is desired. Captive-bred individuals are considerably more adaptable and the better starting point for most keepers. Different geographical variants exist, so sourcing fish from a consistent population is wise to avoid accidental hybridisation.
