Moon Coral (Astreopora longisepta) is a relatively obscure member of the Astreoporidae family, native to the coastal reef systems off Kenya in the western Indian Ocean. In the wild it occupies well-lit, high-flow zones where water movement is consistent and oxygen levels stay elevated. Conditions that need to be closely replicated in captivity if you want this coral to thrive. The colony structure is typically plating or encrusting, with small, evenly spaced corallites giving the surface a fine, almost granular texture that sets Astreopora apart from the more commonly kept Acropora and Montipora relatives it superficially resembles. Color tends toward tans and creams under intense lighting, though specific pigmentation can vary. This is not a coral for anyone still dialing in their system. It demands very high light intensity and strong, consistent flow, and it is unforgiving of parameter swings. Salinity, alkalinity, and nutrient levels all need to stay stable. Experienced reefers with mature, well-established systems and quality lighting will have the best chance of keeping it long-term. Fragging data in the hobby is limited, which is part of why it remains uncommon in collections despite its quiet, understated appeal.
