Starflower Coral (Astreopora ocellata) is a stony coral from the Indo-West Pacific, typically found growing on shallow reef structures at depths between about 5 and 20 meters. In the wild it takes on a dome-shaped or flattened growth form, and up close the colony has a distinctive texture: large corallites with notably wide openings are scattered across a coarse coenosteum, with smaller corallites tucked in the spaces between them. Coloration tends toward earthy tones, browns, creams, and yellows, which gives it a more understated look compared to some flashier reef-builders, but the bold corallite pattern is genuinely interesting once you get your eye in. In the aquarium this is a species for experienced reefers. It demands intense lighting and brisk, consistent water movement to replicate the high-energy shallow reef conditions it comes from, and like most SPS-type corals it is unforgiving of water quality lapses or fluctuating parameters. Placement should give it both good light exposure and strong flow without directing a direct laminar blast at the colony. If you can meet its needs reliably, it makes a textural addition to an established reef system, but it is not a coral to start with while you are still dialing in your setup.
