Found in coastal drainages, rivers, swamps, and lakes across Uruguay, southern Brazil, and parts of Argentina, Australoheros facetus is a chunky, adaptable cichlid that has carved out a reputation as one of the hardier species from its region. One of its most notable traits is an unusual resistance to cooler water temperatures, which has helped it establish feral populations well outside its native range in parts of Europe. It grows to a solid size and carries the bold, assertive personality you'd expect from a cichlid that competes in everything from slow-moving creeks to murky lake shallows. In the aquarium, it eats just about anything, prepared foods, meaty items, and plant matter all get accepted without fuss, which makes feeding straightforward. The challenge is its temperament. This species can be genuinely aggressive, and that tendency spikes considerably when a pair decides to breed. On the upside, breeding pairs are attentive parents that guard eggs laid openly on flat surfaces like rocks or driftwood, and watching them coordinate fry defense is one of the more rewarding experiences this fish offers. A spacious tank and carefully chosen tankmates are non-negotiable. A good fit for intermediate keepers who enjoy South American cichlids and want something a bit off the beaten path.
