Balanophyllia helenae is a solitary stony cup coral known only from the waters around Saint Helena, a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic that sits within Britain's exclusive economic zone. Its extreme geographic isolation makes it one of the more obscure species in the hobby, and specimens reaching the trade are genuinely rare. Like other members of its genus, it is an azooxanthellate coral, meaning it contains no symbiotic algae and relies entirely on direct feeding rather than light to meet its nutritional needs. This is an important distinction from most commonly kept stony corals, and it shapes everything about how you keep it. Low lighting suits it well, and the focus of care shifts entirely toward regular, targeted feeding with meaty foods. Moderate flow helps deliver planktonic material and keeps waste from accumulating around the polyp.
