The banded acara (Bujurquina vittata) is a modest-sized cichlid from the river systems of the Paraná and Paraguay drainages in South America, where it inhabits shallow zones along the riverbank. It won't knock your socks off with flamboyant coloration, but what it lacks in flash it more than makes up for in personality. Particularly when it comes to breeding behavior. Both parents share responsibility for guarding the eggs, and once the yolk-sac larvae hatch, the adults take them directly into their mouths for protection. This mouthbrooding-adjacent behavior is genuinely fascinating to watch and sets this fish apart from many other cichlids of similar size. Outside of spawning, banded acaras are generally less aggressive than many of their cichlid relatives, though they still carry that characteristic cichlid assertiveness when territory is at stake. A 30-gallon aquarium gives a pair enough room to establish themselves comfortably. Their diet is straightforward for an omnivore. They're not particularly fussy feeders. This is a good choice for someone who has kept community fish before and wants to try their first cichlid without jumping straight into something demanding. A rewarding fish if you're patient enough to earn their trust.
