The banded dwarf cichlid (Apistogramma bitaeniata) is one of the more geographically variable members of a famously complex genus, and tracking down which color form you have is half the fun for dedicated Apisto fans. Wild populations span black-water tributaries across Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, the Nanay, Mazán, Tigre, and many others, and fish from different river systems can differ noticeably in coloration. Brazilian forms tend toward yellower head markings and a more elongate body with a well-defined lower lateral stripe, while Peruvian fish lean toward blues. Hobbyists typically label their fish by collection locality to prevent accidental hybridization, a practice worth following if you intend to breed them. In terms of behavior, this species sits in the intermediate care bracket. Not especially demanding, but not a beginner fish either. Captive-bred individuals settle into a community setup more readily than wild-caught ones, which do best alongside small dither fish like pencilfish and ideally without other Apistogramma in the mix. Breeding follows the typical Apisto pattern: the female deposits eggs in a cave or crevice and takes charge of guarding both eggs and fry. In tighter quarters she can become quite assertive toward the male, so having a plan to separate him is wise.
