Found in the slow backwaters and shallow stony banks of rivers draining French Guiana and adjacent Brazil, Guianacara geayi is a compact South American cichlid with an interesting social life. In the wild it favors calm pockets near cascades, often sharing space with other rheophilic species along gravelly, rocky margins. What sets this fish apart behaviorally is its harem-based mating system. A single male maintains bonds with multiple females, which is unusual among cichlids of this size. Spawning takes place in concealed locations, typically caves or sheltered crevices, and while the male will pitch in to guard offspring that stray near his territory, the bulk of egg-tending and fry care falls to the females. In the aquarium, this division of labor makes for genuinely interesting observation once a group settles in. Reaching a modest size at adulthood, Guianacara geayi is manageable in a reasonably sized tank but still needs territory to feel secure. Décor that mimics its natural habitat, smooth stones, caves, and a soft or sandy bottom, helps bring out natural behaviors. It's a good fit for a keeper who has some cichlid experience and wants something a bit off the beaten path.
