The Batanta Blue Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia synergos) is a small but vivid rainbowfish native to Batanta Island in the Raja Ampat archipelago of West Papua, Indonesia. In the wild it occupies narrow, clear-flowing rivers that begin in secondary forest before pushing deeper into dense, closed-canopy primary jungle, where pools form over limestone cobble and gravel. That habitat gives you a sense of what it expects in captivity: clean, well-oxygenated water with good clarity and minimal organic load. Like most rainbowfish, this species is an active, open-water swimmer that does best in groups, showing its best coloration and most natural behavior when kept with several of its own kind. The characteristic rainbowfish body shape is here on a smaller frame than many of its relatives, which makes it workable in a 30-gallon setup provided the tank is long enough to let the fish move freely. Males will display and spar gently for dominance, so a mixed-sex group keeps things lively without becoming aggressive. Its care sits at an intermediate level largely because of its sensitivity to water quality and its preference for harder, slightly alkaline conditions that not every tap supply naturally provides. For keepers who can match those parameters, it is a rewarding and rarely seen species.
