Black Arowana

Black arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai) is a long, ribbon-bodied predator native to the blackwater rivers of the Rio Negro basin in South America. It's one of the less commonly kept of the arawana clan, but shares the same prehistoric silhouette that makes this whole group so recognizable. A flattened, elongated body, large reflective scales, and a mouth that opens wide and upward. In the wild, these fish patrol the surface and are well known for launching themselves out of the water to snatch insects or small prey from overhanging branches. That behavior doesn't disappear in captivity, so a tight-fitting, heavy lid is absolutely non-negotiable. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in terms of basic water chemistry tolerance, the sheer scale of this fish means it's really only practical for keepers with serious space to offer. Adults can push well past two feet, and they need a tank that gives them room to turn around and swim in their characteristic slow, undulating way. They're mostly peaceful toward tankmates they can't swallow, though anything small enough to fit in that upturned mouth will eventually disappear. With proper conditions, a black arowana can be a long-lived centerpiece animal for decades.
