The Black Darter Tetra (Poecilocharax weitzmani) is a small but feisty characid from the soft, acidic blackwaters of the upper Solimões, Negro, and Orinoco River basins. It goes by "Black Morpho Tetra" in some of the trade, and it turns up more often as an accidental addition to wild-caught cardinal tetra shipments than as a deliberate export. Despite its modest size, this fish has a real personality. Males are intensely territorial toward each other and claim cave structures as their own, which makes tank design an important consideration. When males are ready to spawn they deepen in color and develop noticeably thickened white pelvic-fin tips, while females darken overall and show a vivid red anal fin. The breeding behavior is genuinely fascinating: the male guards eggs deposited on cave ceilings, fans them with his tail, and removes any that fail. He will often refuse food for the entire incubation period. Unlike most small characids, this species doesn't school. Plan your community carefully: benthic and territorial tankmates are a bad idea, but mid- to upper-water swimmers like pencilfish or small hatchetfish work well. This is not a beginner's fish, it demands very soft, acidic water and a well-thought-out setup, but for the keeper willing to put in the effort, it's genuinely rewarding.
