The Black Kuhli Loach (Pangio oblonga) is a slim, eel-shaped cobitid from the slow-moving streams, forest leaf litter, and shallow muddy waterways of Southeast Asia, with a range stretching from Vietnam and Thailand down through Malaysia and Indonesia. Unlike its banded relatives, this species wears a plain reddish-brown to near-black body with no patterning. That uniformity is actually one of the reliable ways to tell it apart from similar Pangio species. In the aquarium it spends most of its time close to the bottom, weaving through plant roots, squeezing into crevices, and generally making itself invisible. Hobbyists sometimes notice a distinctive "dancing" behavior, rapid circular swimming along the glass, most often triggered by water changes or feeding time, though it can happen unpredictably. Despite the "aggressive" and "territorial" tags that sometimes appear in data sheets, real-world experience with this species and the broader genus consistently points to a peaceful community fish. It poses no threat to tankmates of reasonable size, though eggs and very small fry may be at risk. Keep at least five or six together, because solitary individuals tend to stay hidden. Fine sand substrate, plenty of cover, and soft-water companions like small rasboras or gouramis make for a comfortable setup. Captive breeding is rare but has been documented accidentally.
