Found in the Vichada and middle Meta River drainages of Colombia and along stretches of the middle Orinoco basin, Apistogramma hongsloi is a dwarf cichlid that stands out from many of its relatives in one notable way: it does not appear to practice harem spawning. Instead, pairs form and raise their young together, which makes for some genuinely interesting breeding behavior to observe. Males are the showier sex, as is typical across the genus, while females are smaller and take the lead role once eggs have been deposited in a crevice or cave among the decor. In smaller setups the male may need to be separated, since females can become intensely defensive of fry in tight quarters. Wild-caught individuals tend to be more sensitive and are better kept in a species-focused setup, perhaps alongside small dither fish like pencilfish. Tank-raised specimens are considerably more forgiving and can work in a well-chosen community. Either way, mixing this species with other Apistogramma is best avoided, and hobbyists serious about the genus often keep geographic populations separate to prevent hybridization. Taxonomically, this species sits within the A. hongsloi complex, itself part of the broader A. macmasteri group. One corner of a genus still being actively worked out by researchers and enthusiasts alike.
