The Blunt Head Cichlid (Laetacara curviceps) is one of those small South American cichlids that consistently wins over keepers who give it a chance. Native to the lower tributaries of the Amazon basin in Brazil, it stays compact in the aquarium. Most fish top out well under three inches. The common name refers to the somewhat rounded, blunt profile of the head, and the alternate nickname 'Smiling Acara' reflects a facial expression that many keepers find endearing. Coloration is subtle rather than flashy, with iridescent highlights that reward close observation, and males often display a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin and another near the caudal fin. Useful markers if you're trying to identify your fish or sort it from close relatives like Laetacara dorsigera. Temperament is genuinely peaceful for a cichlid, though pairs will become more assertive during spawning events. They're biparental substrate spawners, meaning both parents share duties raising the fry, which is one of the rewarding behaviors that keeps cichlid keepers hooked. A planted setup with plenty of cover suits them well. This species isn't the easiest beginner fish, it appreciates good water quality and a settled, low-stress environment, but it isn't particularly demanding once a stable tank is established.
