The zebra catfish (Brachyplatystoma juruense) is a large, predatory catfish from the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, and it brings a lot of personality to a suitably sized setup. Its patterning is distinctive. Broad, dark vertical to oblique bands on a pale yellowish body, sometimes breaking into spots on certain individuals, with a blotched or barred caudal fin. Some fish show richer coloration and are traded under names like 'flash zebra' or 'flash tigrinus,' though whether those differences are tied to geography or individual variation isn't fully understood. New keepers should know this species is occasionally confused with Brachyplatystoma tigrinum, particularly as juveniles, but the zebra catfish tends to have a deeper body, shorter barbels, and a less sharply defined pattern. During the day, it rests on the substrate in a characteristic tripod posture, propped up on its fins, and becomes an active hunter once the lights go out. It is strictly a carnivore, so tankmates need to be large enough that they won't be treated as a meal. Captive breeding hasn't been achieved, and wild relatives are known to undertake long seasonal migrations tied to reproduction. Despite its size and predatory nature, the care level is considered manageable, though the tank footprint required is substantial.
