Sometimes sold under the trade names 'emerald-eyed rasbora' or 'hi-spot rasbora', Brevibora dorsiocellata is a small cyprinid from the soft, acidic waters of the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia. The most commonly available form is commercially produced in large numbers and is fairly understated in color overall, but what catches the eye is a bright blue-green reflective patch in the lower portion of the eye. Genuinely distinctive for such a small fish. A less frequently seen wild form adds russet-red coloring along the caudal peduncle and tail base, with the intensity varying depending on the fish's mood and condition. In terms of temperament, few fish this size are as easy to get along with. It poses no threat to tankmates and does well alongside other small cyprinids, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, loaches, catfish, and small anabantoids like chocolate gouramis or diminutive bettas. The key to getting the best out of this species is keeping it in a group of at least eight to ten individuals. Smaller numbers make the fish skittish, while a proper school encourages the males to color up and display naturally. Spawning is achievable with some attention to setup, though raising fry in a community tank without intervention is unlikely. A solid choice for the keeper who wants a well-behaved, characterful nano schooler.
