The brilliant red hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus) is one of those reef fish that immediately draws the eye. Not because it moves around much, but precisely because it doesn't. This species is a classic percher, planting itself on a prominent rock or coral head and using that vantage point to watch for prey and rivals alike. In the wild it ranges widely across the Pacific, from the Ryukyu Islands and Micronesia down to the Great Barrier Reef and the Austral Islands, where it favors surge-swept reef fronts and shallow submarine terraces. It has a particular affinity for branching corals in the genus Pocillopora and Stylophora, retreating deep into their branches when threatened. That vivid, all-red coloration is consistent across the body and makes identification straightforward. In the aquarium it carries that same bold personality, claiming a territory and defending it with attitude well out of proportion to its compact size. It's a carnivore that targets small crustaceans, so any ornamental shrimp in the tank are fair game. Reef keepers should also note that this species can be hard on small, delicate coral-dwelling invertebrates. Color can fade over time in captivity, so good water quality and varied nutrition matter. Best suited to hobbyists with some saltwater experience already under their belt.
